Energy represents a key element for sustainable development policies targeting economic growth that respects the environment and social equity, at both business and country levels.

At global level, the sustainable development charters and protocols signed at the various major international conferences initiated by the United Nations therefore give it a predominant position, aiming to gradually reduce greenhouse gas emissions thanks to a diversification of the means of energy production and the development of renewable energies.

In this way, the Kyoto Protocol, which has been ratified by 180 countries, including around 40 industrialized countries, and came into force on February 16th, 2005, notably provides for a collective reduction of these emissions by at least 5% compared with their 1990 levels over the period from 2008 to 2012.

In addition to the application of the Kyoto Protocol, the French state is carrying out a range of actions promoting the development of renewable energies.
